BATON ROUGE – Aaron Dun, a pre-trial inmate awaiting trial in St. John the Baptist Parish, attempted to escape from the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in Baton Rouge at about 7 p.m. Monday evening.

Officers captured Dun, 32, as he scaled one of the prison’s inner fences surrounding his prison cell block and got caught in the razor wire.

Dun is charged with home invasion, aggravated kidnapping and armed robbery in St. John Parish. He is also a registered sex offender in Alabama, where he is wanted for several additional charges.

The Department of Corrections is detaining him at the request of the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office because he is a flight risk. Dun has been at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center since May 18, 2020.

Attempted escape charges are pending. The escape attempt is under investigation.

According to St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre, Dun was involved in a pursuit with state police shortly after midnight on May 5. Louisiana State Police saw a red Kia Soul, reported stolen from Alabama, traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 near mile marker 200 in LaPlace.

Police attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop. During a brief pursuit, the driver exited at Belle Terre Boulevard then crashed the vehicle on Foxwood Lane, fled on foot from the vehicle into the woods towards Sugar Ridge Drive.

Shortly after, officers responded to the 2000 block of Sugar Ridge Drive in LaPlace in reference to a home invasion, kidnapping and armed robbery incident. Upon arrival, officers learned a 73-year-old female victim was inside her residence with her 93 –year-old mother, and a 7-year-old child when an unknown male armed with a knife forced entry inside the home. The suspect held the victim at knifepoint, forcing her to exit the home and enter the passenger side of her 2002 Toyota Camry.

The suspect, still armed with his knife, then entered the driver’s side of the victim’s vehicle and fled the scene. Shortly after, the suspect released the victim at a nearby hotel and fled toward Interstate-10 in the victim’s vehicle. No one was harmed during the incident.

Through investigation, detectives learned Dun was the driver of the stolen vehicle involved in the pursuit and developed him as the suspect in the home invasion, kidnapping and armed robbery.

Dun was arrested in New Orleans by the U.S. Marshals with assistance from the Louisiana State Police and the New Orleans Police Department. He was seen near the Walgreens on Broad Street, where he led officers on a brief foot chase before hiding under a nearby home. Dun surrendered after the K9 unit was brought in.
