I’ve heard it said that if you stand by your convictions, God will honor you.

Last week, I read about Olympian Eric Liddell, a Scottish athlete who ran in the 1924 Olympics. I then remembered seeing the movie, “Chariots of Fire,” the award-winning movie of his life.

He was scheduled to run the 100-meter race he trained for and could possibly win and receive a gold medal. The race was scheduled on a Sunday. That was a problem for him because he didn’t think he could honor God by running on the Lord’s Day. He bowed out of the race because of his convictions. His loyal fans were stunned, and some called him a fool.

Eric, however, wasn’t a man-pleaser, but a man of convictions. He stood on this scripture: “I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.” (Judges 11:35). Because of his convictions, God honored him.

During the week, a runner had to drop out of the 400-meter race and Eric was offered to run a race he had not practiced for which was four times as long as the one he trained for.

Eric finished the race in record time, winning the Gold medal, but most importantly, he made an uncompromising stand for his faith.

He later became a missionary in China, and while there he died in a prisoner-of-war camp in 1945. The message is this — Stand by your convictions and God will honor you.
