Update: The VFW Poker Run has been postponed to September 20.
LAPLACE — VFW Post 3337 of LaPlace is raising funds to fuel its mission of supporting veterans in need. The community is invited to participate in an exciting poker run, followed by an evening of live music, mouth-watering barbecue and a chance to win priceless raffle items from local businesses.
Registration for the poker run begins at 9:30 a.m. March 21 at VFW Post 3337, located at 205 W. Fifth Street in LaPlace. Kickstands go up at 10:30 a.m., and the group will travel to Gator’s Den (194 Old U.S. 51 in Akers) to collect playing cards. Other stops on the round trip back to W. Fifth Street include The Hangout Sports Bar (22899 Highway 22 in Maurepas) and Airborne (1504 Highway 44 in Reserve).
The person with the best poker hand at the end of the journey will win a prize. Wesley Mitchell of Post 3337 said a prize will also be offered to the participant with the worst poker hand.
Live music from Cold Shot kicks off at 4 p.m. at the VFW Hall, and Mitchell said community members don’t have to ride in the poker run to participate in the after party.
The door fee is $20 for poker run riders, $10 for poker run passengers and $15 for those who simply want to enjoy food and music.
“Barbecue from Sarge’s Mobile Smoke House will be included in the cost at the door,” Mitchell said. “It’s open to the public. We just want people to come out and have a good time to help the VFW that helps support the veterans and the community.”
Post 3337 is active in the community and strives to lend a helping hand to veterans wherever possible. According to Mitchell, this can translate to helping veterans down on their luck pay electric or energy bills. When a veteran ends up stranded on the road, VFW members will help provide a hotel stay or a hot meal.
Most recently, Post 3337 opened its doors for a fundraiser supporting Hayden Cashio, a young man in the community who recently underwent brain surgery to remove a malignant tumor.
Mitchell said the March 21 event also includes an array of raffle prizes, including oil changes from Bayou Ford, oil changes/care care kits from Rainbow Chevrolet, a $200 gift certificate from Live Canvas Tattoo, a haircut and a shave from Just 4 Him, a crawfish cooker from Ace Hardware and much more.
There will be an auction for Saints game tickets. The winner will be able to pick any game to attend throughout the season, up to and including playoff games.
