Recently, while addressing a group of men at a drug rehabilitation center, I said, “I assume all of you believe in God.”

One of the men said, respectfully, “No sir, I don’t.”

A few of the men immediately asked, “How can you not believe in God?”

I interrupted and said, “He is most probably in a better place, spiritually, than all of you.”

I then explained that the Bible says God would rather a person be hot or cold toward Him. If you are lukewarm, like most people are who believe in God, He says that He will spit you out of His mouth.

The man who said that he didn’t believe in God was an atheist.

As a Christian, I believe in God and profess a belief in His Son, Jesus Christ.

Another group of people are those who believe that the human mind cannot know whether there is a God or an ultimate cause, or anything beyond material phenomena. These are agnostics.  

I know no one should argue religion. I realize that it’s a lose-lose situation.

However, I will never miss an opportunity to share my faith when the opportunity arises.  

I’ll never forget years ago while ministering in the St. Charles Parish Prison, a convicted murderer challenged my faith in Christ.

After a brief discussion, he wanted me to prove that God existed and questioned how I could possibly believe.

I then realized he was enjoying a conversation that was going nowhere.

As the conversation ended, I told him God gives us a free will to make choices. I also told him I believe God is real and I choose to believe in a life after death.

We agreed to disagree and I was satisfied with that. I then said, “One thing is certain. One of us is right and you’d better hope it’s not me.”

A few years later, he died in Angola. I sometimes wonder if his opinion of God ever changed.
