LAPLACE — National tennis sensation Cori “Coco” Gauff is coming to town for a week to visit her River Parishes family. She and her family will arrive at the Louis Armstrong International Airport at midnight tomorrow.

Her local family has organized a “surprise” welcome to Louisiana, according to her cousin Jeunay Gauff Roberson.

“We are extending an open invitation to the public to greet her,” Roberson said. “We are asking everyone to wear Mardi Gras colors and bring signs, posters, second line hankies, etc.”

Coco will have at least one “open” 90-minute practice session while in town. Location, time and date are to be announced. She will be introduced at the Battle of the Bands and Bayou Classic.

At 15 years old, Coco is the youngest player ranked in the Top 100 by the Women’s Tennis Association and has a career-high ranking of No. 68 in the world. Gauff made international headlines this year when she defeated her role model and prominent tennis star Venus Williams at Wimbledon. She reached the fourth round of Wimbledon and remains the youngest player to qualify for the main draw in the tournament’s history.
