PARADIS — Families are invited to a day of food, games and marching parade fun at the fifth annual St. Charles Soccer League Champions’ Day.
The event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at J.B. Martin Middle School in Paradis and continues with soccer games throughout the day. With more than 44 soccer teams and close to 1,000 players in the growing program, Director of Coaching Paul Shenton said the event is the perfect opportunity to commemorate the end of the fall rec season.
“We wanted to do an event that focused on being able to get together with the community,” Paul said. “It’s an opportunity to get all the volunteers, coaches and the kids together to recognize them and give parents an opportunity to give them some praise.”
Children from each team will form a marching parade at with beads and music and family and friends cheer from the sidelines. Champions’ Day will also feature interactive games with the Hahnville High School soccer team, fun contests, bounce houses and a variety of local vendors eager to share their products. Food trucks, pizza, donuts and roasted corn are among the delicious selections available from local cooks and food trucks parked onsite.
The St. Charles Soccer Club has a mission to create a positive, challenging environment that fosters physical, mental and social growth in each player. According to coordinator Ashley Shenton, programs provide age and skill appropriate training and competition by highly trained coaches.
“Our club is growing and it able to offer amazing opportunities and possibilities for kids as well as adults,” Ashley said.
She said Champions’ Day is a steadily growing tradition that helps foster a family-friendly organization.
For years, Paul Shenton has dedicated himself to making sure youth can learn the sport regardless of their situation. St. Charles Soccer Club operates as an independent nonprofit to help grow the St. Charles Parish recreation department. However, participation is not limited to just one parish.
“We’ve got quite a few kids from St. John that come to St. Charles to play because they don’t have an established soccer program there,” Paul said. He added that Champions’ Day is a perfect opportunity to learn more about the St. Charles Soccer Club’s family-oriented initiatives.
Participants in the soccer program range from 4 to 19 years old. Opportunities include recreational and competitive leagues, an indoor soccer league and seasonal camps.
