I believe that we were all created by a loving God for the purpose of making a positive difference in the lives of others.

This week, I had the privilege of speaking to a group of St. Charles Parish employees. For my presentation I choose the following words from the English poet and dramatist, William Shakespeare: “To thine own self be true.”

In the dictionary “true” is described as being faithful, loyal, constant, reliable and certain.

My focus was to challenge each person in the group to be honest with themselves, take one day at a time and not to compare themselves with others.

I shared that tomorrow, today will be called yesterday and that will be history. There’s nothing we can change about it.

Today is called the present because it’s a gift. We can choose how to use it.

I encouraged them to be true to themselves, so they can be an influence in their families, the people they work with, their friends and their community.

As I closed the session, I quoted the following, which I heard 40 years ago on a motivational tape: “Ninety-eight percent of the people die at age 21, but don’t get buried until they are 85 or 90.”

They don’t really live. They just exist, watching life go by. Maybe it’s time to get in the two percent that makes things happen, enjoy life and touch other people in a positive way.

I suggested that the only thing necessary to become true to yourself is an attitude change.

Be positive, knowing that God wants you to be a servant and make a difference in people’s lives.

When that happens, you will be amazed at the difference in your life.
