Jefferson Parish – On June 19 around 11 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a five-vehicle crash on I-10 east near Bonnabel Boulevard in Metairie, LA. This crash ultimately claimed the life of 16-year-old Christopher Cruz of Marrero, La.

The initial investigation revealed a 4-vehicle crash occurred in the left lane of I-10 east near Bonnabel Boulevard, which involved a 2017 Toyota Rav 4, a 2016 Nissan Altima, a 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe and a 2005 Honda S20. As a result of that crash, the passenger of the Honda S20, Christopher Cruz, along with the driver of the Honda S20 and the driver of the Nissan Altima exited their vehicles and were standing on the roadway near the left shoulder. A 2009 Pontiac G8, driven by 39-year-old Carlton L. Williams, approached the location of the initial crash and struck the Toyota Rav 4 and the three occupants near the left shoulder, including Cruz.

Cruz sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Nissan Altima suffered severe injuries and is being treated at a local hospital. The driver of the Honda S20 suffered minor injuries and was also treated at a local hospital. Williams was uninjured as a result of the crash.

Impairment is unknown at this time and blood samples were obtained from all drivers as a part of the ongoing investigation.

While it is still unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash, Troopers remind drivers that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana.  Have a plan and designate a driver before you decide to drink. In the event of a motor vehicle crash, the driver shall remove the vehicle from the travel lane of the highway to the nearest safe shoulder if the vehicle is not disabled and no injuries occurred. LSP also recommends that you remain in your vehicle, seat belted until law enforcement arrives and secures the scene for safety.
