LAPLACE — Kecia Coulter of LaPlace has a knack for creating cakes that are as great-tasting as they are beautiful. She’s ready to serve the public with a sweet treat for any occasion at UniKakes Bakery, a new one-stop shop for desserts located at 434 Belle Terre Boulevard in LaPlace.

The irresistible smell of freshly baked cake and cookies greets customers who walk through the door. True to its unicorn-inspired name, the bakery’s pink décor and whimsical decorations create an upbeat atmosphere to make guests feel right at home.

Coulter has been baking cakes out of her house for the past four years. It started out as a hobby inspired by Food Network shows. While watching contestants on baking competitions, Coulter imagined herself making the same cakes. She purchased her first set of cake pans from Michaels, not quite knowing what she was getting into, and stayed up until midnight making her first cake from scratch. A perfectionist by nature, Coulter strived to make each cake better than the last and unleashed her creativity with each design.

“I’ve always had a knack for doing something creative, and then when someone actually gave me the push in the right direction, I went for it. I haven’t looked back since,” she said. “I think you put a little more love into it when you’re actually baking a cake from scratch versus buying it out of the box. You want it to look pretty as well as taste really good.”

Coulter has learned there’s a cake for just about any occasion. She’s completed custom orders for weddings, birthdays, graduations baby showers, gender reveals and much more.

Coulter’s talent can bring almost any creative vision to life. She’s created everything from Frankenstein cakes sculpted out of modeling chocolate to a cake a mother requested to look like her daughter’s messy room. Other special orders have included Cocomelon, Dragon Ball Z characters, superheroes, WWE Smackdown and “drunken girl” cakes.

“I think a lot of bakeries have the same old school type of designs and ways to do things. I think I am more so into the trends, trying to find what’s new,” Coulter said. “I’m always trying something different and going to cake conventions to try to broaden my knowledge and test the boundaries of what I can do with a cake.”

Cupcakes, cookies, brownies petit fours, cake pops, chocolate dipped strawberries and specialty king cakes are among the other delicacies Coulter can whip out for special occasions or to make ordinary days a little sweeter. Many ready-made treats can be found inside the bakery from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

“Each week I have a different menu with cakes, cookies, brownies and things like that. On Saturdays we do something special,” Coulter said.

Within the past few weeks, Coulter has offered cheesecake cups, stuffed apples and berry Chantilly cups on Saturdays.
