LAPLACE — The St. John Legends Track Club located in LaPlace offers athletes ages 4 to 18 an opportunity to increase their fitness through fast-paced competition in summer 2021. According to Coach Mark Creecy, joining the team gives children the opportunity to hone skills that can apply to other sports.

“Track is like a gateway to other sports. Especially for kids in the St. John Parish area, it gives them an opportunity to doing something for the summer,” Creecy said.

The St. John Legends Track Club competes in more than 20 track and field events, including various throws, jumps, discus events and hurdles. This year will be highlighted with meets in Houston, Atlanta and Florida in addition to local meets, and Creecy is looking for more young athletes to join the team.

No prior experience in track is needed to participate, according to Creecy. Since the team was formed in 2013, it has shaped both toddlers and teens into competitors. The Legends have gone to Club Nationals every year, except for in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought track meets to a halt.

In 2019, St. John Legends Track Club member Zha’nell Francois placed third in the triple jump in the national competition.

The St. John Legends Track Club season runs from April to August. Practice times vary while school is in session and will be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during the summer. Parents should also expect weekend practices until the season starts.
