LAPLACE— Although there are over 1,500 National days to celebrate certain things, from National Sibling Day, to National Hot Dog Day, I recommend if you are a pie lover that you definitely celebrate this one!

In 1986 The American Pie Council, (yes there is such a council), created National Pie Day to commemorate Crisco’s 75th anniversary of “serving foods to families everywhere.” It is celebrated every year on January 23.

It actually all started in the mid 1970s by Boulder Colorado’s nuclear engineer, brewer and teacher, Charlie Papazian after he declared his own birthday, January 23, to be National Pie Day. Since 1986, National Pie Day has been sponsored by the American Pie Council.

2014 National Pie Day/Labor Day

There was actually a romantic thriller film, “Labor Day”, released in 2014, tying in a pie-making scene that was featured prominently in the movie. The American Pie Council even distributed a promotional poster to pie shops and bakeries featuring images of the film’s stars, Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin and Gattlin Griffin in the pie-making scene.

No matter how you “slice” it, no pun intended…National Pie Day celebrates one of our country’s favorite desserts. Pie in any form can make just about everyone happy and momentarily replace any craziness going on in the world with each mouthwatering bite. No matter if it fruit pies, berry pies or crème pies, they all make life just a little sweeter when served with some homemade goodness. The only problem you may have is should you eat that delicious pie à la mode?

FUN FACT: Did you know the first pie ever made appeared on the scene 9,500 BC in the Egyptian Neolithic period or Stone Age? So now you know that humans have been eating pies for a very long time.

FUN TIDBIT: Crème filled or pies topped with whipped crème are always favorite props for humor. Throwing a pie in a person’s face has been a staple of film comedy since Ben Turpin received one in “Mr. Flip” in 1909.
