Choice International Ministries is holding a food distribution in conjunction with Second Harvest Food Bank at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 2. The distribution will be held in the Annex building behind the Choice International Family Worship Center located at 516 E. Airline Highway in LaPlace.

This event will be first come, first served.

Last week, Choice International served food to approximately 400 families. Vanoy Allen, a member of the ministry, said uniting to serve the community is the best way to navigate this time of uncertainty. Providing food additionally helps families who are hurting regain a sense of stability.

“We have to do what we need to do to keep people safe,” Allen said. “What we do have control over is pulling together as a community, as a family, and supporting one another. That’s what the church is all about. The food distribution has helped ease the minds of the people. It relieves a lot of stress.”

Families picking up food will remain in their vehicles to abide by social distancing guidelines. Volunteers will work from at least six feet apart to stock cars with a variety of perishable and nonperishable foods. Previous distributions in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank have included canned foods, potatoes, onions, chicken, eggs, milk, fruit and other sustainable foods.

Choice International has reached out to the National Guard for assistance.

“The workers are keeping distance, wearing masks and using sanitizer,” Allen said. “Only people who are healthy and strong are out there working from six feet out.”
