Since my last article in this paper on March 25, 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has arrived in full force in St. John the Baptist Parish.

Only three weeks ago, there were only two deaths from the COVID-19 virus, with 38 people who had tested positive. Through Monday, April 13, a mere three weeks later, the figure stands at 42 dead and 556 who tested positive.

The numbers of newly diagnosed cases continue to increase daily, indicating widespread occurrence in our community. On-site testing has started in our parish with test sites currently set up at the Ochsner ER facility and Wal Mart in LaPlace. There is testing for West Bank residents at the Teche Action Clinic In Edgard on Tuesday and Friday, and at Hahnville High School in Luling daily.

Our elderly and nursing home population appears to be the most vulnerable, particularly with medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity, and heart/lung disease. I strongly encourage the general public to wash hands frequently and wear masks in public places and at work, along with practicing social distancing to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.
