LAPLACE – The St. Charles Catholic Lady Comets played a familiar District 11-2A foe in the first round of the Division III girls basketball playoffs. The Comets used a smothering defense and a good transition offense to claim a 48-14 victory over the MeGehee Hawks.

St. Charles Catholic jumped to a 12-0 lead within the first minutes of the game. The momentum continued to build with help from Kaitlyn Abair, Mallory Fernandez and a three-pointer from Kelly Campbell.

Even after the Hawks took shots from the free throw line, the Lady Comets led 25-4 by the end of the first quarter. That lead increased to 36-8 by halftime.

No. 5 Kelly Campbell keeps the ball out of McGehee’s reach.

Campbell snagged 13 rebounds, and Fernandez added 10 more to lead the defense for St. Charles Catholic. Abair led the Lady Comets on offense with 16 points.

Jordan Felix and Cameron Metzinger accounted for all of the points for the Hawks, who were held to only 14 points in the contest.

St. Charles Catholic led 41-10 after three quarters, when Head Coach Dawn Gaubert chose to substitute some younger players. The Lady Comets closed out the game with a 48-14 victory.

St. Charles Catholic will advance to the quarterfinals and travel to Covington to face the Northlake Christian Wolverines at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27. The Wolverines are a No. 4 seed, while the Lady Comets are ranked fifth.

The winner will move on to the semi-finals of the Division III State Basketball playoffs to play the winner of the meeting between St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Mary’s Academy.
