EDGARD — On Monday, Ad Hoc Judge Kirk A. Vaughn handed down the Court’s sentence to Juan Ramos for his Attempted Manslaughter conviction. Ramos was convicted in September of this year of Attempted Manslaughter for his involvement in the 2018 attack on a Montz resident at 115 Augustin Lane, Laplace.
Judge Vaughn explained to Ramos on Monday that after reviewing the evidence of the case, along with a presentencing investigation report, he was left with no choice but to sentence Ramos to twenty (20) years with the Department of Corrections. Judge Vaughn explained that he found Ramos’ violent attack to be unprovoked and unreasonable. The judge also indicated that Ramos’ self-serving allegations of self-defense were unfounded, and that Ramos’ lack of remorse gave the Court no choice but to sentence Ramos to the maximum available sentence under the circumstances.
After a three-day long trial, a jury found Ramos guilty of Attempted Manslaughter for the August 6, 2018, attack on Bryan Guillot, 47 of Montz. Evidence showed that Ramos hacked and slashed at Guillot with a machete, striking him in the face and slashing both arms to pieces. With several arterial lacerations in his arms, Guillot nearly died from his injuries. The jury deliberated for just over two and one-half hours before returning their verdict to Judge Vaughn.
The maximum sentence for the crime of Attempted Manslaughter is twenty (20) years with the Department of Corrections. Ramos, who is presently held on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold, faces deportation by the federal government of the United States of America after this crime of violence conviction.
This case was prosecuted by District Attorney Bridget A. Dinvaut’s office through Assistant District Attorneys J. Philip Prescott, Jr. and Geoffrey Michel of the 40th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Ramos was represented by Shannon Battiste, of the 40th Judicial District Public Defender’s Office.
