Vacherie man sentenced for fatal shooting

ST. JAMES — On Sept. 19, a St. James Parish Jury found 28-year-old Rojae Dumas of 13154 Willow St. Vacherie, LA. guilty of Manslaughter. Dumas was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Bruce Mohon and Adam Koenig. Presiding over this matter was the Honorable Judge Jason Verdigets. Dumas was on trial in connection with the shooting death of 47-year-old Reynald Jackson, also of Vacherie.
On Dec. 2, 2017, deputies with the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the Wag-A-Pac convenience store located in Vacherie in reference to a shooting.
Upon arrival, deputies located a male subject identified as Reynald Jackson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Jackson was pronounced deceased on scene. Investigators identified Rojae Dumas, Jackson’s stepson, as the shooter. Shortly after the shooting, Dumas turned himself in to the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office and was booked into the St. James Parish Jail on the charge of 2nd Degree Murder.
On Nov. 18, Rojae Dumas appeared before Judge Verdigets for sentencing. Dumas was sentenced to 25 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served.
