Poché: Libraries hosting Black History Month events throughout February in St. John

Black History will be celebrated throughout the entire month of February at St. John the Baptist Parish Libraries.

The Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve) will showcase a “Who Am I Interactive Display” that will share historically important facts about several African Americans.

The display will invite users to read the information and guess to whom the facts are referring to. It will be held for the entire month of February and all ages are welcome to participate.

They will also be hosting “Black Cinema Saturdays,” at 2 p.m. every Saturday.

Movies celebrating black culture will be shown for adult patrons only.

Black History Programs will be held at all branches of St. John the Baptist Parish Libraries.

The Roland Borne Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard) will be celebrating Feb. 11 at 5 p.m.; the Norris Millet Sr. Library (LaPlace) on Feb. 13 at 6 p.m.; the Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve) on Feb. 18 at 6 p.m.; and the Frazee-Harris Memorial Library (Garyville) on Feb. 21 at 5 p.m.

The programs will be showcasing the works of worldly and local leaders. Patrons of all ages are welcome to each event.

Please join us for four nights filled with history and awareness of the importance of black history.

• Valentine’s Day will also be celebrated at the libraries.

Norris Millet Sr. Library (LaPlace) will have a “How Many Kisses” contest held for the entire month of February.

The Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve) will be hosting “Valentine’s Day Love Bugs” 10 a.m. Feb. 9, when patrons of all ages are welcome to participate.

“Make Shoppe” will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library.

Adult patrons are invited to celebrate love.

Frazee-Harris Memorial Library will have a “Valentine’s Day Simply Paint,” at 4 p.m. Feb. 11, and children, ages 8 and up, are invited to participate.

Children, ages 6 and up, are invited to the Roland Borne Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard) to make “Origami Heart Bookmarks” at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 13.

Tweens and teens are also invited to the Roland Borne Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard) at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 14 to make “Paper Airplane Valentines” for a special friend or family member.

• The month of February also brings the Mardi Gras spirit to the libraries.

The Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve) will be hosting a “Mardi Gras Mask Make & Take” event for the entire month of February.

They will also host a “Mardi Gras Morning Makers,” at 10 a.m. Feb. 19. Adult patrons will be embellishing umbrellas. Sign-up is mandatory for this program.

The Roland Borne Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard) will be making “Mardi Gras Masks,” for adult patrons only, at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 26.

Norris Millet Sr. Library (LaPlace) will be hosting a “Mardi Gras Storytime” for children ages 1 and up at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 28.

Children, along with their parents, will also be making a Mardi Gras craft after the program.

Frazee-Harris Memorial Library (Garyville) will be hosting a “Mardi Gras Storytime” at 5 p.m. Feb. 28 for children ages 5 and up.

Please join any of the branches for their carnival programs.

There will be a multitude of programs at each library branch for the month of February.
