Former WSJH star Maya Trench named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana’s Maya Trench was named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar for the 2017-18 academic year.
The West St. John High graduate is from Edgard and is currently a sophomore accounting major at Xavier.
During the 2017-18 season, Trench averaged 8.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.9 steals per game.
She led Louisiana with a 2.03 assist/turnover ratio, which also is a Xavier season record.
Diverse Issues in Higher Education — a magazine based in Fairfax, Va., and sponsor of the awards since the mid-1990s — announced the honorees April 5.
Criteria for the awards include being a person of color with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 through the fall 2017 semester.
Honorees must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and have a demonstrated record of service to the campus or community.
