GARYVILLE — Students from St. John the Baptist Parish Public Schools will engage the public and share their knowledge of STEM subjects by demonstrating interactive experiments and activities from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garyville – Mt. Airy Math and Science Magnet School.

Located at 240 Louisiana 54 in Garyville, the third annual event is open to the public and includes presentations from elementary through high school students.

Representatives from NASA, Entergy, Tulane University and Southern University will be present to share the importance of STEM in education and discuss opportunities that lie within the field, according to Jennifer Boquet, communications specialist for St. John Public Schools. During the event, guests enjoy refreshments, rotate through rooms and participate in students’ experiments.

Boquet said community response to the event has been positive for the past two years.

“Students love sharing what they’ve learned, and little siblings love participating and making things bubble and blow up,” Boquet said.

She said St. John Parish places an emphasis on STEM subjects, including science, technology, engineering and math, to equip students with the knowledge they need to pursue successful careers.

“STEM is the future,” Boquet said. “You’re not going to be able to get a job with technology, science and math skills. We really try to push that in St. John schools, especially in Garyville.”

Acadian Diagnostics Laboratory and the St. John the Baptist Parish District Attorney’s Office are sponsoring the event.
