Jamie Hollingsworth, 38, of Newton, Miss., died due to injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash shortly after 2:30 p.m. Thursday on Veterans Memorial Bridge.

The preliminary investigation, according to Louisiana State Police, revealed Hollingsworth was traveling northbound in a Dodge 2500 pick-up when he approached a large Case farm tractor that was towing a sugar cane trailer in the right lane.

The tractor was being operated by 55-year-old Patrick Shepard of St. James.

For reasons under investigation, according to State Police, Hollingsworth’s vehicle struck the farm trailer from behind. Hollingsworth was not properly restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene by the St. John Parish Coroner’s Office.

Police said Shepard sustained minor injuries and was taken to St. James Parish Hospital for treatment.

Impairment is not a suspected crash factor; however, standard toxicology tests are pending on the part of Hollingsworth.

“While the reasons for this crash remain under investigation, Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that sugar cane harvest is approaching and our highways will have large farm vehicles and equipment transporting crops,” a State Police release said. “These vehicles may be slow-moving, and motorists should be aware of all of the traffic around them.”
