A Reserve man, who’s 2015 Mardi Gras arrest caused a firestorm of media coverage do to its sensationalizing via an uploaded YouTube clip, was found guilty last week of misdemeanor disturbing the peace in relation to an incident the same day involving the Riverside Academy marching band, according to published reports.
Nola.com reported Jefferson Parish prosecutors dropped the two charges against Brady Becker, 19, that stemmed directly from his Feb. 13, 2015, confrontation with police, Judge Donald Rowan Jr. convicted Becker for appearing in an intoxicating condition, disturbing the peace following a judge trial Aug. 30.
During a March 4, 2015, news conference, then-Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said the Riverside band was marching by a Matairie parking lot when Becker walked into the middle of the band in the street and to get into the face of a seventh grader.
Normand said the issue got out of hand and a band chaperone put her hand around Becker’s waist in an effort to get Becker to the outside of the band.
“What’s Mr. Becker’s response?” Normand said. “I guess because he was confident that she was not the police, he turned and he shoved her. Then it required three or four other chaperones to get involved in order to remove Mr. Becker from the middle of the band.”
At the time, Riverside Principal Perry DiCarlo did not respond to a L’OBSERVATEUR question asking if there were any altercations reported by the band concerning Becker getting in the face of a seventh grader or other student.
Becker’s attorney, David Belfield III, was emphatic in telling L’OBSERVATEUR in 2015 that the Riverside Academy band director and DiCarlo told him they never received any complaint about Becker, and Becker was just excited to see the band, adding no altercation occurred.
In September 2015, Craig Betbeze, public affairs specialist with the FBI New Orleans Division, released the following update to L’OBSERVATEUR and other news agencies.
“The FBI New Orleans Division can confirm that an investigation was conducted involving Brady Becker’s civil rights allegations against a (Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office) Deputy,” Betbeze said.
“Insufficient evidence was developed to support a federal prosecution.”
