NEW ORLEANS — The man accused of drowning a Reserve couple is expected to spend the rest of his life behind bars after he was found guilty this week, published reports indicate.

Horatio Johnson, 41, will receive a life sentence in September when he is sentenced following guilty verdicts Thursday to murder, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice following the February 2014 killings of Kenneth and Lakeitha Joseph.

The trial took place in New Orleans because the couple was found in the city’s Intracoastal Waterway weeks after they were reported missing from their St. John Parish home.

According to court records, on Feb. 19, 2014, family members reported to the St. John Sheriff’s Office that Kenneth and Lakeitha Joseph were missing.

A relative indicated she loaned her 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan to the Josephs but the van had not been returned. On Feb. 27, 2014, the missing Caravan was recovered by the Fulton County Police Department in College Park, Ga., at an apartment complex.

Investigators discovered the van had been parked at the Travelodge Hotel in College Park. On Feb. 21, 2014, surveillance showed Frank Mike Jr. driving the van into the hotel parking lot.

In March 2014, the bodies of Kenneth and Lakeitha Joseph were found in the Intercoastal Waterway in New Orleans East.

The New Orleans Parish Coroner determined their deaths resulted from drowning. Later, forensic testing revealed blood samples taken from the stolen van matched the DNA of both victims.

The bodies of the Reserve married couple were found separately, his on March 22, 2014, and hers on March 10, 2014.

According to the Advocate, “prosecutors never laid out a concrete motive for the killings, but one witness offered a hint. Mike said on the stand that (another suspect) told him his crew had pulled off ‘a little move’ with the van that netted them $200,000 and nine kilograms of cocaine. The lead detective on the case, Ryan Vaught, also testified that Kenneth Joseph’s brother sold drugs.”

The homicide investigation into who killed Kenneth and Lakeitha gained momentum with Mike’s April 22, 2014, arrest.

Mike pleaded guilty Aug. 12, 2015, to interstate transportation of a stolen vehicle from Louisiana to Georgia and was sentenced that year to imprisonment for time served and up to three years of supervised release.

According to nola.com, jurors were unanimous Thursday in finding Johnson guilty of obstruction of justice. They rendered guilty verdicts on the other counts by votes of 11-1.

Numerous other suspects have been charged for various roles in the killings.

Brittany Martin, a former security guard and Johnson’s one-time girlfriend, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in January 2015 and is awaiting sentencing.

Steven Bradley is awaiting his murder trial in the case, and suspect Amir Ybarra remains at large.
