LAPLACE — As the start of the school year approaches, many local organizations and businesses have sponsored backpack and school supply giveaways for cash-strapped parents.
Krystal Placide-Taylor wanted to do something a little different.
Placide-Taylor is the owner of Da Beauty Bar, a local hair salon that has been in business since May of 2015 at 1036 W. Airline Highway, Suite 116, in LaPlace.
Placide-Taylor is hosting her first Back to School Extravaganza from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at the salon, offering discounted services for students and teachers to help them be at their best when they return to school.
There also will be a giveaway.
Da Beauty Bar will offer $5 hair trims and up to 50 percent off some other services.
That includes $35 relaxers, $25 silkpress, $5 deep conditioning treatments, $100 sewins, $25 braids and $15 teen facials.
“I wanted to do something unique,” said Placide-Taylor, who was born and raised in St. John the Baptist Parish. “We’re a small community. I want to help ease the cost for some of the parents as they get ready to go back to school. For the students, I just want to help build their confidence up so they feel good about themselves.”
Placide-Taylor said she will have four stylists, a braider and a makeup artist available for customers on a first-come, first-served basis.
No appointments will be taken, and patrons are asked to bring a school I.D. The first 25 students who receive services will get a free mesh school backpack filled with school supplies. The first five teachers receiving services will get a free gift (still to be determined).
Students also will receive a free dental hygiene bag, while supplies last.
“They are paying for services, but they will be getting something for free too,” Placide-Taylor said. “They will be getting more than they pay for.”
Placide-Taylor said she hopes to make this an annual event.
“This is our first extravanga,” she said.
