Keller: ‘Cat’ Keller served for 48 years at St. Peter without fanfare

In every community, most of the conversation is about people making the news.
People who make the headlines are usually politicians, athletes, religious leaders, movie stars, criminals, etc. They give us material for everyday discussions.
The people who we take for granted are the ones who fly under the radar and perform behind the scenes, but make a positive impact on our lives.
One such person was honored by the Archdiocese of New Orleans two weeks ago at the Peppermill Restaurant in Metairie. Her name is Catherine “Cat” Jacob Keller of Reserve.
She was honored for 48 years of service as a cafeteria worker at St. Peter School in Reserve.
She was married to my dad’s youngest brother, Carol, and although younger than me, became my aunt.
“Cat” lost her mother at a young age and was raised by her older sister, Ethel, who had six other siblings to provide and care for.
When her children (one boy and three girls) were in St. Peter School, the principal, Sister Mary Joel, persuaded “Cat” to take the job in the cafeteria. She said she would stay as long as her children were at St. Peter’s.
That was the beginning of 48 years of faithful service to the school.
The reason God’s doesn’t reveal His plan for our lives is because we couldn’t handle it.
I’m sure if Sister Mary Joel had asked “Cat” to sign a contract for 48 years, she would have refused.
For 48 years, she worked as hard as anyone, never complained, treated the children equally and, very seldom, missed work.
Her husband died 21 years ago.
If I hadn’t heard about the Archdiocese honoring her, I would have taken her service for granted and would not be writing this article.
I’m reminded of what God’s Word says: “In order to be great among many, you must be a servant to all.”
Aunt “Cat,” thank you for your unselfish service to our community.
