The Emily C. Watkins Elementary students were the top winners last week in the DARE essay contest.

They, along with their classmates, were celebrated by Sgt. Darlinta Garrison, who awarded Drug Abuse Resistance Education certificates April 26 during DARE graduation.

Sgt. Darlinta Garrison led DARE graduation for fifth graders at Emily C. Watkins last week.

More than 50 fifth graders earned certificates, and the students were recognized during a morning assembly.

Garrison led the school-based drug awareness and prevention program that teaches students about drug awareness and prevention, while instructing them in decision-making for safe and healthy living.

The 10-week lessons, offered locally to fifth graders in elementary schools, address drugs, violence, bullying, internet safety and other high risk circumstances students’ may face in their lives.
