Robottom: WRDA bill highlights positives

In preparing for the New Year, it is a great time to reflect on the past and plan for the future.

Last year at this time, voters entrusted me with the opportunity to lead the Parish for another four years, and I am proud to say that the outlook for 2017 is very bright.

As Parish President, I am extremely pleased to announce the recent passage of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2016 by the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.

The bill will head to President Obama’s desk for signature after more than 40 years in the making. WRDA 2016 authorizes construction of the Westshore Lake Pontchartrain Levee Project, which brings us one step closer to reducing the threat of flooding to our area.

Since 2012, countless hours have been spent testifying and advocating for this project in Washington D.C. and it is finally coming to fruition. Hurricane protection and risk reduction are critical to the growth and safety of our parish and we will continue to work with our state and federal partners until this project is constructed.

I also remain committed to improving our water and wastewater systems.

Construction is complete on a $1.9 million project linking the Edgard and Lions water treatment plants, thus providing a backup water supply for both banks of the river.

In LaPlace, the effort to provide a sustainable and reliable water source of is finally moving forward.

The Membrane Filtration Piloting Project will be underway next year and results can be utilized for the Lions, Edgard and LaPlace Treatment plants.

This same technology is proposed for the Pleasure Bend community.

In addition to drinking water improvements, more than $12 million will be invested in the wastewater treatment systems next year.

Construction of an Oxidation Pond, new electrical controls for the River Road Treatment Plant and I/I repairs are slated for 2017.

Residents and business owners can also look forward to more than $15 million in new facilities. The new East Bank Government Complex, Hemlock Fire Station and West Bank Senior Center will be completed next year and more road, bridge and intersection improvements are slated for 2017.
