LUTCHER — Lutcher head football coach Dwain Jenkins said he has no plans to retire after leading the Bulldogs to the Class 3A football state championship with a 40-36 win Saturday over Amite.
He will not be following the paths of Lutcher’s Tim Detillier and Riverside Academy’s Bill Stubbs, both of whom announced their retirement shortly after winning titles.
“Somebody said I should fire myself and start somewhere new,” Jenkins said. “I won a state championship my first year as an assistant, my first year as a coordinator. I got to the Dome my first year as a head coach and I won it my first year as head coach at Lutcher.”
Jenkins led St. James to a runner-up finish to Lutcher last year. He became the Bulldogs’ head coach in February, after Detillier retired.
Jenkins’ team had high expectations to repeat as champs this season, even though no Lutcher team had done so before.
No other Lutcher team had senior quarterback Jontre Kirklin, however, an LSU commitment who earned his second consecutive Most Outstanding Player award after rushing for 223 yards and one touchdown and passing for 158 yards and three scores.
The Bulldogs (13-2) still needed a big third quarter to seal the win after trailing 22-20 at the half. They came through to outscore Amite 20-6.
Now Jenkins is turning his attention to putting away equipment, the end-of-year banquet and ordering his team another set of state championship rings.
He also is looking to the future as the LHSAA will set the districts for the next two years at today’s Executive Committee meeting in Baton Rouge. Lutcher is moving up to Class 4A.
Said Jenkins: “I saw Neville and Karr play for the 4A championship. That’s a whole other level.”
