LAPLACE — The top two students in their category battled Wednesday for first place and the chance to move onto Regionals.

Eighth grader Madison Boudreaux, 13, of John L. Ory stands next to the poster she did on Scientology.
Students, singles and teams, for all 13 pubic schools in St. John the Baptist Parish met at St. John the Baptist Parish Community Center for the District Social Studies Fair.
Students were judged on their poster board, oral presentation and the research they did on their topic. Each poster had to have a written report element or the student was disqualified. Some students got their ideas from books, learning about the topic in school or from their family.
Each student had three minutes to tell the judges about their topic, then judges had two minutes to ask questions.
Even though judges had to pick the top three in each category, only the first place project moves on to Regionals. The students were not told their results until after the fair.
