EDGARD — It’s not every day that a university offers a full-ride scholarship to an athlete just as their senior year season is beginning.
But not every athlete has a record like Maya Trench.
Xavier University offered Trench a full scholarship to play basketball for the Gold Nuggets, valued at more than $35,000 a year. Trench and her parents signed the commitment paperwork Wednesday.
“She is a really good basketball player,” West St. John girls head basketball coach Lester Smith said.
“She has always been really good and she keeps getting better. I’m really glad she is on our team. She deserves this scholarship. I know she’ll do well at Xavier.”
Trench is a member of the West St. John High School basketball team and played her first game of the year Monday, scoring 13 points.
Trench started playing basketball for West St. John in 2011 while in eighth grade.
During that season she scored 476 points and earned awards for All District, All River Parishes and All Metro and helped lead her team to a 27-6 season.
By her freshman year, Trench totaled 418 points, helping her team secure a 31-2 season.
She added the awards for All District, All River Parish MVP, All Metro and All State.
In the 2013 season, Trench set a record scoring 534 points for the year.
She earned All District MVP, All River Parish MVP, All Metro and All State and contributed to WSJ’s 26-6 season record.
As a junior, Trench totaled 448 points for the Lady Rams’ 26-6 season.
She was awarded All District MVP, All River Parish MVP, All Metro MVP and All State.
The 5’2” basketball player said she started playing when she was 6 years old and hasn’t stopped since the first time she held a ball in her hands.
“I never thought about going to Xavier,” Trench said.
“I was originally looking at other universities. But I think it’s the right choice for me, the right fit.”
Trench said she is excited to be going to Xavier next year.
“It’s a really good school,” Trench said. “They have really good programs.
“I love the coaches.”
Trench plans to major in business.
“After I’m finished with school I want to go overseas to play basketball,” Trench said.
“Then I want to come back and open my own business.”
Trench said basketball has always been her first love.
“I love the feeling that I get when I’m playing,” Trench said. “Nothing else matters when I’m on the court.
“It’s just me and the ball”
