LAPLACE — The St. Charles Catholic captured their second district win Friday in as many weeks.

The Comets (6-1) overwhelmed the Newman Greenies (4-2) with a crushing 45-9 victory.

This was the second district loss for Newman, which first loss last week against Riverside Academy.

“We started off very sluggish,” SCC head football coach Frank Monica said. “Newman was playing very well. They led at one point after the first quarter 9-3. But then we scored three times in the second quarter.”

The first-quarter points would be the only ones Newman saw for the night.

SCC led 24-9 at the half. They the Comets scored three more touchdowns in the third quarter.

“We were really sluggish coming in, but in the second half we played with a lot more intensity,” Monica said. “We had a little bit more sense of urgency. We didn’t show any emotions in the first half.

“By the second half, we realized they were going to beat us if we didn’t crank it up a couple of notches and I think we did that.”

Comets kicker Andrew Rodrigue kicked a 38-yard field goal to start the points tally for SCC in the first quarter.

“Justin Loupe had a 40-yard running touchdown,” Monica said.

Senior Tahj Smith completed an 18-yard running touchdown. Wide receiver Brady Becker caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Lloyd Nash. Nash completed a 10-yard run for a touchdown. Eric Lewis had a touchdown run and a four-yard interception return for a touchdown.
