METAIRIE — The Riverside Academy Lady Rebels volleyball team got over an early season slump to win six straight matches and dominate the Grace King tournament over the weekend.
The Rebels started off with a win last week over Landry-Walker Thursday and have not yielded a game since.
Going into the weekend tournament, Riverside was 2-3 and coming off its second victory of the season when the team went on a roll and dominated their opposition.
The Lady Rebels did not just go undefeated, they did not lose a single set in the best two out-of-three format.
“I knew we would have the opportunity to do very well and we just capitalized on it,” Riverside head coach Margot Frederick said.
On Friday Riverside beat Easton 25-9, 25-8 before coming back on Saturday and winning over Lutheran 25-13, 25-5; Bonnabel 25-21, 25-12; and Central Lafourche 25-20, 25-11.
Frederick said the tournament was the first time her sophomore-laden team really came together.
“Things were really clicking for us and they hadn’t done that yet,” Frederick said. “So that was great for the girls, and we had fun being able to watch them enjoy themselves.”
Frederick said the tournament offered her team a chance to gel.
“It gave us an opportunity to work on our side of the net,” Frederick said. “We have been talking about that a lot with the kids. We had emphasized being better teammates and getting them to compliment each other more and acknowledge what each person brings to the floor.”
The top three kills leaders for the Rebels were Briley Becker with 23 kills, Kate St. Pierre had 21 and Sydney Joseph had 18.
Becker said her team feels great about the coming away with the tournament victories.
“We kept trying all the way through the last game and we kept getting better as we went,” Becker said.
Becker said the Rebels have worked hard to become a solid unit and that is where her success lies.
“I wouldn’t have had it without a good pass and great set from Abby (Bourgeois),” Becker said. “So it is all team work and we try to play smart in order to get that many kills.”
Riverside’s Bourgeois led the Rebels in assists at the tournament with 72.
Bourgeois said she is happy to see her team finally coming together.
“We knew we were going to struggle a little bit with how young we are and we didn’t really have any chemistry except a couple of us,” Bourgeois said. “But we have all come together because we are a great group of girls.”
The Lady Rebels record now stands at 7-3 after adding a win over East Ascension Tuesday night in which they split sets 3-1.
The Rebels are entering one of the toughest stretches of their schedule with five games and a tournament scheduled for the end of September.
“It was great to build some confidence and build some momentum,” Frederick said. “The next couple of weeks are definitely going to be challenging. We play teams that are all very comparable to us and so how we played last weekend in being successful we talked about minimizing our errors. If we can do that and take care of us against some of these other opponents, I think we can come out with some really valuable wins.”
