DESTREHAN — Karen Gardner, community nutrition specialist with Second Harvest, will share information about making healthier food choices during “Harvesting Health,” an interactive nutrition workshop.

The workshop will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the East Regional Library, 160 W. Campus Drive in Destrehan.

There will be a second session at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Paradis Branch, 307 Audubon St. in Paradis.

The 90-minute class will focus on reading nutrition labels and MyPlate, which provides information about the building blocks for a healthy diet. Gardner will make one recipe during the workshop, and samples will be available.

In addition to the Harvesting Health workshop, Gardner will host “Cooking Matters at the Store” at 10 a.m. June 25 at Winn Dixie in Destrehan.

This free guided grocery store tour will cover finding healthy deals, reading nutrition labels, selecting fruits and vegetables in different forms and identifying whole grains.

“Cooking Matters at the Store” is a one-hour nutrition and food budgeting class that provides at-risk families and individuals with the skills and confidence to stretch their food dollars and find healthy, affordable groceries.

The class is structured as an interactive grocery store tour. At the end of class, each participant finds ingredients to make a healthy meal for four for $10 or less, paid for by Second Harvest.
