Demetria Robinson Carter, a local Certified Public Accountant, announced she is seeking the St. John Parish Council At Large Division A seat in the Oct. 24 election.
Carter said she has over 26 years of professional accounting experience, including four years of public accounting experience at the “Big 4” firm of KPMG, LLP and 20 years of health care, state and federal governmental accounting experience.
Carter believes that public servants must always remember they serve the public and cannot take the public for granted.
“We need to pay attention when members of the public speak during Council meetings,” she said. “They must have a voice in the political process, so we need to establish and attend neighborhood meetings.”
Carter said she will work to build a stronger, proactive team relationship between the Parish Council, Sheriff’s Office, Attorney General’s office, Parish School Board and other institutions that support families and youth.
Carter will improve communication with the public about relevant issues using innovative methods such as email, Facebook, Twitter and robocalls. She also pledges to support St. John residents in getting honest, prompt and complete responses from St. John Parish Council officials.
According to Carter, she will work to improve the quality of life in St. John Parish on the East Bank and West Bank, including but not limited to economic development, senior citizen and juvenile proactive activities, blighted housing issues, mosquito control, drainage, community center, public parks and recreational facilities. She said she would also work to make an additional interstate exit in St. John Parish a reality.
Carter is a graduate of East St. John High. She received her Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Accounting from Southern University A&M College in Baton Rouge and attained her CPA certification by the State Board of Certified Public Accountants of Louisiana.
She is a member of the State Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants, National Association of Accountants and St. John Baptist Church in Mount Airy.
A native of Mount Airy, she resides in Garyville with her husband Herbert, and their son, Joshua. Carter is the daughter of Florence Robinson Jones of Mount Airy.
