BATON ROUGE — With district track and field meets set for next week, East St. John and West St. John took to Baton Rouge for one final tune up, the boys and girls teams for each school competing at the Panther Relays at Woodlawn.
East St. John took the first place girls crown while the boys earned second place at the event. West St. John took ninth on the boys and 12th on the girls side in a competitive field.
East St. John’s Dontrell Allen won the boys 100, his time of 10.81 outpacing West Jefferson’s Kevin Crayton’s 11.07. West St. John’s Austin Alexander and Kie’Ave Harry finished fifth and sixth in the 100 with times of 11.24 and 11.28, respectively.
East St. John boys track and field coach Greg Gathers said Allen, a 6’, 180 pound junior who is also an accomplished defensive back on the football team, isn’t done making an impact.
“He’s just a special kid,” said Gathers, who said he believes Allen’s mark of 10.81 set an East St. John school record in the 100. “I think he’s the best kept secret in the area, and a guy who has a chance to be a top five athlete in the entire country before it’s all said and done. He’s talented, but it’s almost like he doesn’t know it. He has such a strong work ethic, and I tell him, ‘When you start getting the attention, keep that work ethic.”
The Wildcats’ Jarrod Jackson took first in the boys 400 with a mark of 51.08.
“Jarrod’s a kid who runs all three relays for us,” Gathers said. “He qualified for state last year in the 400, so I put him back in that event. The 400 comes right after the 4×100 ends, though. So not too long after running that second leg of the 4×100, he runs a personal best time in the 400. He’s already committed to (Louisiana –Lafayette). He’ll just keep getting better.”
The ESJ 4×100 boys relay team (Javon Brown, Jarrod Jackson, Xavier Lewis and Dontrell Allen) finished second to Destrehan, 43.01 to 42.83. The 4×400 team (Dequan Cross, Jarrod Jackson, Javon Brown and Brian Cain) earned second place (3:33.20).
ESJ’s Javon Brown took second in the boys 110 hurdles. Johnell Crockett earned fifth in the 3200 (11:37.41).
