Chamber endorses area’s May propositions

St. James Parish Superintendent Dr. Lonnie Luce, St. John Parish Chief Administrative Officer Michael Coburn and St. Charles Parish Superintendent Felicia Gomez-Walker presented the below propositions to the River Region Chamber Public Policy Committee on March 3.
The River Region Chamber Board of Directors unanimously supports the following propositions.
• St, James Parish School System – Proposition for the May 2 ballot to authorize the School System to issue $56 million in Bonds using existing millage to finance the following Capital Improvements:
– To renovate and improve Gramercy Elementary, Paulina Elementary, Vacherie Elementary, 5th Ward Elementary, Lutcher Elementary, Lutcher High School and School Board Office.
– To Construct New St. James High School and Competitive Swimming Facility.
• St. John the Baptist Parish — Proposition for May 2 ballot to authorize Parish to continue to levy a special tax of one mill for the purpose of constructing, operating and maintain the Parish courthouse, jail and office buildings of the Parish.
• St Charles Parish Public Schools — Proposition for May 2 ballot to authorize the School System to issue $42 million in bonds using existing millage to finance the following Capital Improvements:
– Safety and Security Upgrades at all schools.
– Light Replacements for all elementary schools.
– Building renovations for Lakewood Elementary and Cammon Middle School.
– Construct a New Performing Arts Center.
The Chamber supports the initiatives made by our local governments and school systems as they use efficient operations to make progress without raising taxes.
