Keller: God’s challenges lead to our personal growth

Have you ever felt like God challenged you to do something only to test your faithfulness?

I admit there were many times when He tested me and I failed. If only I could realize that when I’m tested, it’s for my personal growth and I’ll reap the benefits.

The other day while driving, I received a phone call. The person calling said, “Mr. Keller, this is Doug. Do you remember me?”

I had no idea who Doug was so I asked if he could refresh my memory.

“I met you at Fontainebleau Treatment Center and when I completed the 28-day program, I was to go to the Assisi Bridge House in Schriever, Louisiana. I had no way of getting there and asked if you could take me.”

I then remembered I agreed to take him, but believe me, I wasn’t excited to drive from LaPlace to Mandeville and then to Schriever and back to LaPlace.

He said that was Oct. 1st of last year.

He shared he had just completed his stay at the Assisi Bridge House and had recently celebrated six months of sobriety.

He has a job and an apartment in Houma and is doing great!

He then said, “I just wanted to thank you for everything you did for me.”

Everything I ever did for him!

I thought back of that day I brought him to Schriever. I really wasn’t excited to make the trip, but I did, and as I write this article, I’m excited that I passed God’s test for me.

Doug shared he was excited about his new life and living sober. He told me he was 45 years old and originally from Baltimore, Maryland.

He has a job at a barbeque restaurant and said that’s OK for now, but would like to get a job working in sales.

We agreed to keep in touch.

That phone call from Doug made my day. It proves that God will give you what you need when you need it. That day I needed to be encouraged.

The next time I’m tested and get aggravated, I hope I remember Doug’s story.
