NEW ORLEANS — After a couple of quiet weeks, Erron Lewis was back in peak form Friday night — and St. Charles Catholic back to winning comfortably.

The Comets won their second straight district road game Friday night, besting host McMain 49-14 in District 11-3A action.

Lewis rushed for 117 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries to help lead the Comets, who rushed for 351 yards on the night.

“Everyone did their part,” St. Charles coach Frank Monica said. “Our kids played with confidence tonight. (McMain) is an explosive team and our defense came up with some big stops.”

Quarterback Austin Weber carried 14 times for 121 yards, leading all rushers. He rushed for a touchdown and attempted just five passes, completing two for 54 yards, both to Brady Becker. Justin Loupe rushed 11 times for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Lewis ran for touchdowns of 15 and two yards to launch SCC’s offense early in the first quarter. McMain answered with a Darnell Williams-to-James Howard 77-yard touchdown pass, but it didn’t slow the Comets down.

Weber and Lewis each rushed for 1-yard scores, then Loupe scored from 15 yards out. Lewis scored on a 4-yard run. When Kobi Dennis crossed the goal line for a 2-yard touchdown, SCC (6-2, 3-1) had scored on seven of its first eight possessions.

“Our goal was to score on the first possession of the night and the first one coming out of the half,” Monica said. “I thought we did a nice job setting the tone.”

SCC also corralled Williams, who has been a productive threat with his arms and legs this season. Williams finished with 143 yards of total offense.

“We created some outside pressure to keep him in the pocket,” Monica said. “He still got loose for a couple of nice runs, but we were ‘bend but don’t break’ tonight on defense.”

The Comets punted just once on the night, and it was returned for a 61-yard touchdown — drawing the ire of Monica, who is known to refer to special teams as a “sacred cow” of the program.

But on the whole, the coach was pleased with the victory, which sets the Comets, ranked third in Class 3A, up for a homestand to end the regular season.

“We get to go home now for the last two,” Monica said. “Hopefully we can run the table and set ourselves up to host a playoff game.”
