Lutcher captured its first state baseball crown since 1975 Saturday, capturing a 4-0 victory over top-seeded St. Thomas More in the Class 4A championship game at McMurry Park in Sulphur.
The Bulldogs’ Jared Poche dominated en route to his 11th victory of the season, nailing down a 1-hit complete game shutout. Poche struck out 11 batters and walked just one.
It’s the fourth state championship Lutcher has won in baseball. The Bulldogs also won titles in 1951 and 1967.
Lutcher scored four runs, three of them coming off of St. Thomas More errors. Zachary Zimmer scored the first run of the day on a first inning throwing error, and it was all the run support Poche needed.
Lutcher finished the season 29-4. The Bulldogs allowed just four total runs over their five postseason games.
St. Thomas More finished its season 29-5.
