SCC students recently attended the Unity Through Understanding Day, an all-day workshop focused on the need to end prejudice, discrimination and bullying. The students were accompanied by SCC religion teacher Gary Ault.
“It was a life impacting
event that allowed me to safely leave my comfort zone and strengthen my virtues through the help of fellow peers,”
said SCC junior Patrick Juneau.
The annual Unity Through Understanding Day Workshop was held at the Goldring  Woldenberg Jewish Community Campus. The workshop provided a day of anti-bias training for students and a learning tract for educators. High schools in the greater New Orleans area were asked to select six to eight students to attend the workshop. Students participated in a day of interactive activities to break down stereotypes, develop a common language, discuss the Pyramid of Hate and explore their own biases and prejudices.
The special guest speaker for the day’s workshop was Holocaust survivor and author Anne Levy. A child survivor of the Holocaust who transformed the horrors of her childhood into a passionate mission to eliminate prejudice, Levy inspired the students to understand the need to treat everyone with kindness and respect. “
It was so very interesting.  We discussed how we as teenagers must be open-minded and the effect of bullying and how to prevent it,” said SCC student Elizabeth Watson.
