LAPLACE – Important elections will be held in St. John the Baptist and St. Charles parishes this Saturday.
The residents of St. John Parish will vote on the St. John Parish School Board bond issue, in which the School Board asks permission to take on a $10,180,000 bond to aid in funding for the repair of East St. John High and the possible rebuilding of Lake Pontchartrain Elementary School.
The bond issue comes along with the recent announcement of a $4.6 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the same purpose — School Board officials said that they may not accept the grant because it is not enough to cover the cost of rebuilding Lake Pontchartrain.
In St. Charles Parish, residents will vote again to decide which contender will fill the District 2 St. Charles Parish Council seat. The choice is between Republican Mary Keller Cluelee and Republican William “Billy” Woodruff. During the April 6 runoff, Woodruff garnered the most votes, edging out Clulee by 74, 46 percent to 40 percent. Vanessa Johnson garnered about about 14 percent of the vote.
The principal office of the registrar of voters in each parish will be open from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. the day of the election, but election day voting hours are from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Information about polling locations for each parish may be obtained by visiting the Louisiana Secretary of State website and clicking the “Election Day Voting” tab.
Voters will be asked to identify themselves with either photo identification or by signature on a voter affidavit. Voters who have no picture ID may bring a utility bill, payroll check or government document that includes their name and address.
