DESTREHAN – Seniors citizens from all over filled the room during Sheriff Greg Champagne’s Annual Senior Citizens’ Easter Luncheon at the Shriner’s Hall in Destrehan.
Seniors waltzed and two-stepped to a mixture of contemporary music and more than a couple of tunes from a bygone era. In addition to socializing, attendees also received door prizes that could be anything from Snuggies to glassware to candy. The luncheon consisted of catfish, coleslaw, jambalaya, french bread and cake.
A number of employees from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Depart-ment were also in attendance. Champagne has been holding the luncheon every year since 1997. The prior sheriff had already made the luncheon a tradition, so it wasn’t hard to carry on.
“We open it up to the public, and the Council on Aging helps by giving transportation to a lot of seniors that they service,” he said.
Champagne was very pleased with the turnout, though not surprised that every seat was filled.
“They enjoy it,” he said. “It’s a luncheon and they’re here at 9 a.m. And they’re ready to eat too!”
