Enjoying a nice, relaxing day at the ballpark

Spring has sprung! Basketball season is ended, and now it’s time to enjoy baseball, that grand old American game. It’s supposed to be a game where we go to eat hot dogs, peanuts and drink a Coke.
I love the atmosphere at the ballpark. It can be relaxing while talking to fans, sharing stories and just hanging out doing nothing but enjoying the game and having fun. It’s only a game, and no one has any reason to get uptight. It’s baseball, remember, only a game.
The coaches are the only ones who should coach. The fans are there to be entertained and develop relationships. The only ones who have reason to be nervous and uneasy are not the players, but the umpires. Before the game, fans affectionately refer to them as “the umps,” but sometimes during the game, the words are much worse than that.
I don’t think anyone enjoys high school baseball more than I do. On Friday, St. Charles Catholic was scheduled to play Eunice at 4 p.m. My grandson Kameron has the privilege of being a member of the St. Charles team. One of my concerns about the game is that the weather report called for a chance of rain, possibly canceling the game.
Would I be disappointed? Absolu-tely, not only because I wouldn’t get to see a game, but I’d miss the people I look forward to being with.
Where else can you go and meet people like “Smitty,” Connor Smith’s dad, who knows little about baseball, or Allen Weber Jr., Austin’s dad? The Westerns, who handle the concession stand, are one of my favorite couples. Also, Mark Ory (I finally got his name right) and Austin’s personal fan club – his grandmothers Mi-Mi and Carmen and his great-aunt, Mrs. Juliette Alford. And I can’t forget the McNeils, whose son, Chad, is one of my favorite players.
These and many others make a day at the ballpark a great outing.
