Celebrate Christmas by helping others

Now that Thanksgiving, one of my favorite holidays, is over, we must brace up for the hectic Christmas season. Before you know it, Dec. 25 will be here. Christmas – the day
set aside to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We have to admit that it is
a celebration, but is the focus
really on the reason (Jesus) for the season?
Last week, at a Bible study, I
said that I believe we think less of Jesus around Christmas than at any other time. Sure, we sing nice religious songs and send expensive Christmas cards mentioning the Savior, but what is our real passion during this presumed holy celebration?
America is the land of plenty, and during December we prove it. In fact, we drift dangerously near insanity three or four weeks every year.
To prove it, consider these statistics of a few years ago: We spend $8.5 billion during the Christmas season; $150 million will go for wrappings alone, most of which will be immediately discarded; $100 million will be spent on trees; $200 million will be spent on postage; and 2 million telegrams will be sent between Dec. 23 and 25. With all that activity, it’s no wonder we have so little time to concentrate on the birth of our Savior.
I must admit that my family is no different. This year, however, I pray that we change and make an effort to reach out to others in need. With this in mind, the committee of Get High on Life has decided, for the fifth year, to oversee Operation Blessing. This operation will seek out families in need and bless them in a very special way.
Jesus said to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and visit the sick and lonely. Instead of buying me
a gift for Christmas, I will ask my children to give the money they plan to spend on me to Operation Blessing.
Can you be a part of Operation Blessing without us knowing? Certainly. Just secretly pick a family and bless them with food and gifts. Every year, business owners and private citizens ask me to recommend a family in need.
If you want to be a partner with Get High on Life in blessing the less fortunate, please send a check or money order to Operation Blessing, c/o Get High on Life, P.O. Drawer U, Reserve, LA 70084. We have opened a special account for that purpose.
May the real spirit of the Christmas celebration affect all of us with motivation to take action.
God Bless You!
