Although the race for president of the United States, a race won by incumbent Barack Obama, according to unofficial results, was the main draw for today’s election, voters in the River Parishes all had a number of other items on Tuesday’s ballot.
When Louisiana was redistricted following the 2010 census, the River Parishes were split between the 2nd and the 6th districts, the representatives for both of which were up for re-election. In the 6th District, William “Bill” Cassidy was easily re-elected to office, albeit in a reshaped district. He garnered nearly 80 percent of the vote. In the 2nd District, incumbent Cedric Richmond, with 51.26 percent of the vote, is the apparent winner of that election.
Of the nine constitutional amendments on the ballot, eight passed. The only one given the thumbs down concerned property in New Iberia.
Although Obama was re-elected, Mitt Romney easily won the state of Louisiana. St. Charles Parish was the only one of the River Parishes to favor Romney, however, with nearly two out of three St. John Parish voters choosing Obama and nearly 57 percent of St. James Parish voters doing the same.
