Success stories offer encouragement

Someone asked me how many people I counsel for alcohol and drug addiction who recover and stay clean. My experience over the past 31 years tells me the percentage is very small. In my early years of ministering in Get High on Life, that was discouraging. After a few years I realized I was just a messenger, and only God controls the results.

When people are in trouble, I sometimes direct them to different programs that deal with addiction, one being a 12-month Christian program (Teen Challenge) in Hot Springs, Ark.

Years ago I suggested a young man from St. Charles Parish give Teen Challenge a try. Last week I received the following letter from Hot Springs:

“Dear Mr. Keller,

Remember me — Greg Horn from Luling. I would like to take this time to thank you and the people who support Get High on Life. Because of all of you, I am a life that is changed.

I was a ‘crack-head’ who used many different illegal drugs from the age of 16 to 39. Over 10 years ago, you talked to me while I was in rehab at Fontainebleau Treatment Center in Mandeville. You told me that God could help me turn my life around. I rejected the advice at first, but things got worse.

At the age of 39, I called you, and you suggested I go to Teen Challenge in Arkansas. That was the best thing that ever happened to me. I met Jesus there, and my life started to change.

I’ve been a staff member at Teen Challenge for the past 10 years. As a staff member, I help other people the same way Get High on Life helped me. You planted a seed and are now seeing the return.

Thanks, again, to you and all who support Get High on Life. I’ll be forever grateful for getting a second chance in life. It hasn’t been easy, but now I know to call on God for everything.

Love, Greg Horn”
