The St. Charles girls fell in their first three matches of the season but rebounded to win its last over the weekend.

SCC lost to Central Lafourche, 3-0, and to Thibodaux, 3-1, before rebounding to defeat South Lafourche 3-0.

The Comets Laura Hane has scored four goals over her team’s first four contests.

The Comets scored early and often in their victory. Laura Hane scored the first two goals of the day, coming in the third and the 12th minutes of play. Jalynn Johnson tacked on a third, coming in the 29th minute of play.

Against Thibodaux, a Hane goal tied the score at 1-1 before halftime, but the Tigers put two through the goal in the second half.

In the team’s opener last week, Kaitlyn Lemoine and Hane each scored goals in the second half, but it wasn’t quite enough to overcome a three goal first half for Central Lafourche, who has now defeated SCC twice in the young season.

SCC coach Don Peyton said that while the season began with his team down seven girls due to commitments in other sports, they were back this weekend and his team improved as play went on, culminating in his team’s victory.

“We’ve got 20 girls, six haven’t played before,” said Peyton. “We’ve got five seniors, but we’re still very young. This team is more spread out than in years past, we’ve got a number of girls in each class.”

Peyton said that the learning curve could be tough at first. Youth or not, the Comets play a schedule littered with Class 5A schools and high-end lower classification competition. SCC was slated to face Newman Tuesday night. Dates with Dominican and at the upcoming Chapelle tournament are on the horizon.

“We don’t look to schedule easy games, because those don’t make you better,” said Peyton. “The only way to improve is to go against the competition.”
