Destrehan Plantation’s Fall Heritage Day

Kindergarten through third grade students of public, private, parochial and home schools in the New Orleans metro area can make a “Heritage Connection” at Destrehan Plantation’s Fall Heritage Day on Thursday, Oct. 28, 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. This event will be a hands-on

experience for students attending. Students will learn about sugar

refining, open hearth cooking, spinning, carpentry, farm animals, weaving,

indigo dyeing, period music, wood carving, doll making, moss mattress making, calligraphy, antique toys and games, hand stitching and embroidery, quilting and many other folk life skills so important to life long ago.

There will be a Civil War encampment with the firing of cannons by the Fenner’s Louisiana Battery. LSU Ag Master Gardeners will give students an opportunity to plant vegetables in the kitchen garden. The New Orleans African American Museum, the Islenoes Heritage Center and the US Army

Corps of Engineers with the Bonnet Carre’ Spillway will also be a part of

this event. The St. Charles Art Guild

will give students an opportunity to experiment with water colors and oil painting. Many of these demonstrations or presentations will have “hands-on” opportunities for students attending. Admission is $5 for students and adults. A tour of the plantation house will be available at an additional charge of $5. The event is sponsored by the River Road Historical Society and the Azby Fund.
