Encouragement to keep going

“Many are called, but few are chosen” is what the Word of God says.
Jeanne and I have had the privilege of speaking at a rehabilitation center for the past 16 1/2 years. Every Saturday night, we address 40 clients seeking a solution to defeating their addiction. It’s projected that out of the 40 men, only two or three will be successful.
Occasionally, someone will ask if I ever get discouraged. No, because every once in a while I get a letter or phone call from someone excited about their recovery.
One such call came from a young man I met six weeks
ago at the center. The first
night I met him, he had body piercings on his ears, nose,
lips and eyebrow. I immediately called him “pin cushion.” Everyone laughed, including him. I’m amazed how people react when you single them
out, regardless if the comments are negative, as long as they feel
that you
care.
It’s a 28-day program, so I got to see “pin cushion” for the next three Saturdays. He looked forward to seeing Jeanne and I every week and would have been disappointed if I called him anything other than “pin cushion.”
The last week he was there, I told him he needed to get rid of all those decorations on his face. I added, “You just do that to get attention.” I then challenged him and said, “If you really want attention, change your way of life and become the godly man you were created to be.”
Monday I received the following phone message: “Mr. Keller, this is ‘pin cushion.’ I have some good news to tell you. Give me a call.”
When I returned the call, this was his good news: “Sunday before last, I attended Healing Place Church in Baton Rouge and went up for prayer. It was then that I felt like I needed to rid my face of all piercings. That’s not all, Mr. Keller! This past Sunday, I was baptized at the Revival Temple Full Gospel Church. They preach about Jesus Christ and the Cross.”
A New Orleans attorney ends his TV commercial with “One call, that’s all.” That one call I received this week was all I needed to encourage me to keep on keeping on.
