LaPlace – New Orleans Plantation Country hosted a student group at Destrehan Plantation’s Heritage Days and Cajun Pride Swamp Tours during their service trip to the New Orleans Area.

“We are so proud of these kids coming to the New Orleans area to serve that we wanted to help make this touring day special,” noted Kimmie Carlos, sales manager of River Parishes Tourist Commission. “We are helping coordinate the tour in New Orleans Plantation Country and providing bottled water, fabulous Zapp’s potato chips made here and other materials to ensure a positive experience of their time in the River Parishes area.”

Destrehan’s Heritage Day featured Civil War reenactments and a variety of interesting hands-on demonstrations for visitors, including Negro spirituals sung by J. J. Kazi of Country Day School. Costumed interpreters helped tell the story of a people and a place in history. Cajun Pride Swamp Tours offered guests a view into the mysterious Louisiana waterways, including their alligator inhabitants.

“Art Cox, program director with People to People, chose the New Orleans area for this trip not only because of the opportunity for service in the area but also because of the amazing historic and cultural educational experiences it offers,” noted Sandra Pierre-Kazi, tour operator with Worldwide Concepts Vacations in New Orleans who coordinated the trip. “We are hoping to make this an annual trip for People to People.”
