Shawn Steinkamp, president of Grade A Landscaping Services, Inc., of LaPlace, was installed Tuesday as the 2010-2011 president of the Rotary Club of LaPlace.
Outgoing president Melanie Basile, branch manager of Community Bank of LaPlace, administered the oath of office during a banquet that featured awards presentations and remembrances.
The club awarded several honors to members and also presented awards to residents of the community. Among those was Sheela Jambotkar, who received the Delton Arceneaux Citizen of the Year honor.
Originally from India, Jambotkar was honored for her volunteerism in the community. She has been an avid 4-H volunteer for many years, spends time at the parish library helping young children and older adults and is president of the St. John Homemakers Club, among other things.
Also honored from the community were Darryl Isom, a recent graduate of East St. John High School, and Kellie Brady, a recent graduate of St. Charles Catholic High School.
These students had been recognized by the Rotary Club previously as Students of the Quarter. Tuesday they were named winners of the Stephanie “Nikki” Wilking Memorial Leadership Award.
Wilking, who died at the age of 17 in 2001, was founder of “Kids for Kops,” a local group of young people dedicated to raise money to provide bullet proof vests for St. John Parish sheriff’s deputies. The award was designed to match the ideals and standards demonstrated by Wilking – vision, initiative, leadership and originality.
Isom, among other things, was senior class president, a student mentor, a student teller at the Louisiana Federal Credit Union Wildcat branch and president of the school’s Interact Club.
Brady was president of the National Honor Society, which this year started a new service project as they assisted the Rotary Club with monthly bingo at Place DuBourg.
She also participated in the March for Life in Washington D.C. in January, delivered lunches for SCC’s Thanksgiving food drive and was a group leader for St. Joan of Arc’s Bible school program, among other things.
The Rotary Club awarded two Paul Harris Fellow awards this year. The first was given in memory of Brittney K. Galloway and accepted by her father, Jerry “Texx” Galloway.
This award was presented on behalf of a member of the club who wished to recognize another individual and chose to give this award as a memorial.
The second Paul Harris Fellow Award was presented in memoriam of Rotary Club member Alalene Gregoire, who recently passed away. Presenter Dean Torres said Gregoire joined the Rotary Club with a spirit of “Service Above Self,” Rotary’s motto and continually served the community even through her illness. Her daughter, Crystal King, accepted the award.
Three Rotary Club awards were also presented.
Rotarian of the Year is Bill Ironside, president of RTC, and Rookie of the Year is Regina Hickman, pastor of First United Methodist Church of LaPlace.
Rotarians receiving perfect attendance awards were Mary Lynn Altmont, Melanie Basile, Eliana DeFrancesch, Beverly Harris, Bill Ironside, Bob McDowell, Cheryl Millet, Linda Stein, Shawn Steinkamp and Dean Torres.
